Petition to Governor Newsom and State Legislators
We oppose legislation that would hurt our businesses and California's housing supply. Please don't take options away from renters and rental housing providers.
In 2018, voters overwhelmingly defeated Proposition 10, the so-called “Affordable Housing Act." Proposition 10 would have made the housing crisis worse by repealing the long-standing Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act, thus, allowing local governments to impose draconian rent control measures.
Several bills in the Legislature would ignore the will of the voters and otherwise hurt rental home providers:
-
AB 36 (Bloom) revises Costa Hawkins to allow local jurisdictions to apply rent stabilization measures to rental units that are more than 10 years old and single-family rentals and condominiums, with an exemption for landlords owning 2 units or less. (UPDATE: DEFEATED!)
-
AB 1482 (Chiu) would set a statewide annual cap on rent at a yet to be determined amount above the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for all rental properties in the state that are not subject to a local rent control ordinance.
- AB 1481 (Bonta) would implement a just cause mandate for the eviction of tenants, which is an over reaching, one-size-fits-all approach to controlling rental property decisions. (UPDATE: DEFEATED!)
There is a housing shortage in the state, but rent control is not the solution and may in fact inhibit construction of new housing, keep units off the market, and hinder the preservation and enhancement of aging housing stock.
We strongly oppose these efforts and urge you to oppose them as well.
